Inexperienced Leadership
Inexperienced administrators can have a devastating impact on quality of care, employee turnover and morale, and the fiscal soundness of their nursing homes. They are typically slow to deal with performance issues, run off your key employees, mismanage the finances, seldom invest in developing your employees, and are quick to pin blame on other team members.
Nursing homes need administrators that actually connect with residents, families, and employees, rather than just being a presence in the hallways. Good administrators lead by example and are flexible and able to quickly adapt to changing situations as they arise. They should be a calming presence as well as a consistent advocate for quality. These are all skills that must be developed with time and actual experience.
